Letter to Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 63 - February 4, 2006

February 4, 2006

Mr. Dave Rousay, President
Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 63
315-19th Street East
Saskatoon, SK
S7K 0A1

Dear Mr. Rousay:

I am writing regarding the recent announcement that the Legion Hall was sold to Remai Ventures Inc. and that the building will be demolished.

I am interested in the city’s built heritage and am disappointed that the Legion Hall is going to be demolished and would like to understand the circumstances leading up to it.

Media reports suggest that the City of Saskatoon approached the Legion a year or so ago about the possibility of establishing a veterans museum within the hall. According to Councillor Elaine Hnatyshyn in the December 21, 2005 StarPhoenix Legion officials “were going to think about it and get back to us, which they never did.”

It is unclear what the city proposed to the Legion or whether Councillor Hnatyshyn’s comments were accurate since there is no report providing those details. I was wondering could you please let me know what the city specifically offered the Legion?

Thank you very much for your time. I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

Joe Kuchta
Saskatoon, SK
